Fishing Party sees positives in reef review

The Queensland Fishing Party says the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) got off lightly in the Federal Government's review of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act.

In response to the review, federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell has stripped GBRMPA of its power to create no-fishing zones to protect reef biodiversity and established five yearly reviews of its operations.

Fishing Party chairman Kevin Collins is disappointed GBRMPA has not been held accountable for the damage done to fishing businesses.

"I mean, there's some good things to come out of this without a doubt, but the best thing is that it was done in the first place," he said.

"That's the good news, you know that this issue's been forced, government's had to realise that this has gone badly wrong and they must realise that because it's cost them $200 million when it was supposed to cost them $1.5 [million]."
